A group of Moai on Easter Island (Rapa Nui) in the South Pacific Ocean. The island, first settled by Polynesians in about 400AD, is famous for its large monolithic statues of human heads, believed to date from the period 1000 to 1600. It has been administered by Chile since 1888 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
