I’ve never used Wordpress before, but Joomla is the cornerstone of how I build websites. What would be the advantage of switching to Wordpress? Where do you see the future of these two technologies?

WordPress and Joomla are not technologies. They are content management systems.

Biggest advantade switching from Joomla to WordPress would be WordPress itself, period.

Here’s why I prefer WordPress:

  • biggest community > lots of documentation & tuts > you can make it do anything in a relatively easy way
  • less bloat
  • easy learning curve

Future? I’d like to see WP focus more and more on the CMS side of things.

Joomla is crawling with bugs! One of the first sites I built on a CMS used Joomla and it was a disaster. I ended up rebuilding in Wordpress and haven’t look back since.

Thanks for your replies, its good to know where other web designers stand.

Another question regarding joomla vs Wordpress. Which one of the two follows w3 web standards the best? And which one will withstand the test of time? As far as the future holds, which one would a prudent web developer spend his resources on?

Good question,

If you look into my portfolio you’ll see i release both joomla & wp versions.

In my opinion of a dev. who works on both, Joomla is by far a better CMS then WP. WP is the perfect platform for blogging, this was it’s purpose from the beginning but it extended to have some CMS functionality’s which are quite good. However compared to Joomla’s CMS system it’s not even close to J’s features (like i said i’m using them both so i know what i’m talking about). Also Joomla 1.7 has lots of new features and the extension database is expanding fast.

I’m not saying on WP you cannot make normal websites. You can, definitely, great website actually! But things get harder when developing.

WP is a great platform, the best blogging platform ever, great community, huge plugin database and much more popular worldwide (also definitely here on TF).

It’s actually your decision which one to choose, try them both, see which one you like and then take the final decision. If you want to publish themes here on TF, well, you can see the numbers so it’s obviously you can make more money on WP section.

Best,

Marius

^ Great reply from Marius, best unbiased advice on the topic I’ve seen for some time now ;)

This comparison reminds me of another discussion: jQuery vs Mootools. I think it’s exactly the same case. One with bigger community & adoption rate than the other, both created with different purposes in mind.

Hi!

I am a Joomla developer , but i also take care of a support forum for Wordpress themes. As a developer i can say that for me it’s easier to work with joomla because it has a lot of customization options already built in ( lots of settings for articles, menus , categories, etc ). i think you can create very good websites using both CMS ’s .

In my opinion, you should use Wordpress or Joomla depending on what you want to achieve. For example, if you want a super customizable site, i recommend using Joomla, but if you want a simple website that can be set-up fast i recommend Wordpress.

Regarding the extensions directory of both : They both have a big extension directory . You can find a lot of extensions based on your needs ( online store, community website , etc) using any of them , so it is your decision on what to use.

Best regards, Stefan
