Well, here it is (link below), my rendition of the ubiquitous zoom tool.
When I started this thing I never expected development to be as long as it has, but it seems that the end is finally in sight. At one point I almost quit, judging that the potential returns on this thing wouldn’t be worth the effort given how saturated the market is with this kind of tool.
But I kept coming back to it, hacking away until I got to somewhere were its half-decent (I also have a chronic condition called “feature creep” that I have to contend with :P).
So take my little creation for a spin, pointing out its flaws wherever you can find them. I’ve invested far too much time in this thing not to get it right, so don’t hold back..I can take it…

W:OW – Just amazing – Loved everything cept one thing – I couldn’t pan with my mouse. If you can incorporate that, this will be a killer application / utility.
EDIT : I see it on the first one, but it would be nice to just click anywhere on the image and start panning.

Wow, I never expected this could be built in this way! Although everything works smoothly, I can say the obvious problem is usability. Simply the navigation gets too much focus than the content. In general, the users prefers to see the focused area of content in the center of canvas.
Another thing is the buttons are not highlighted on rollover. Great work by the way.
I agree with VF, but still, extremely cool concept, design and animations. Maybe if the navigation wasnt centered it would be better for the user.
nice effect !
Thanks for the positive feedback
. Now to address some of the issues you all brought up.
...it would be nice to just click anywhere on the image and start panning.![]()
Heh…I already have a working version of that, plus two other major half-finished things I want to add before I roll this out…like I said I suffer from feature creep
.
...the navigation gets too much focus than the content. In general, the users prefers to see the focused area of content in the center of canvas.Yeah, I know…navigation is dominant, I was hoping the transition-out animation would offset this (after one second delay), but users will have still the option to position it elsewhere. In terms of composition, given the circular design the control just seemed to fit better when placed at center…have been racking my brain to find other solutions but nothings seems forthcoming…ideas anyone?
Wow, I never expected this could be built in this way!I take it you’re referring to the omni-pan tool. Heh…remember when I told you I nearly had a heart attack…;)
Out of curiosity, did you all try the various options…

I have tried the 4 variations. I think the pan buttons in the cardinal version needs to be highlighted on rollover.
You’re right that would be more consistent overall. Well, barring any unexpected complications, I should have this thing up in a few days. So stay tuned…The link I provided above is about to go down, so admins feel free to lock this thread…Out of curiosity, did you all try the various options…I have tried the 4 variations.
