Web Dev Apps on June 20

Hey guys—

What do you think about the possibility of CodeCanyon selling full apps? Do you think it’s a good idea—when there are already prominent sites on the web that sell them?

I bring this up because I was trying to find a place on CodeCanyon to offer the newly released Structurer Pro on Nettuts: http://net.tutsplus.com/articles/news/structurer-pro-for-premium-members/

And, the problem is: there really isn’t a suitable spot for it on CodeCanyon.

Do you think an Apps category would clutter the site? I’m leaning that way, but wanted to get your input first.

Would this be specifically for desktop apps?

I don’t have an answer more of an observation.

This would mean CC will start selling more expensive items. Let’s say some apps would go up to $50. Do we have such an audience? Most buyers are used to <$10 items … I’m not implying anything here … just something that I came to realise.

+ we already have some apps up for sale. I consider Sitebase’s Statusboard an app. You install it, enter your API key and …. there’s no coding for the end-user. It’s an app

I think an apps section won’t really be a succes at codecanyon. Because I think that the public codecanyon is reaching are mainly webmaster,freelancer and not really the mainstream people who like to install something and hope it works. Yes, some of the client management etc are full applications but I ask myself how many of the buyers leave the installation like it is? Don’t they edit it to match their needs better ? And I think apps are meant to be standalone and not edited.

Agree with everything here

It would be a nice idea and it would allow envato to better expand into the mobile arena and gain a good presence there, even though app competition is fierce.

You would have to find a way to make it stand out though (maybe make a dedicated space for it) otherwise I’m afraid it could get lost in the conglomeration and not get the exposure it needs.

So no I don’t really think it fits for CodeCanyon but it could be a hit as a new marketplace or maybe an extension of CodeCanyon

I say hell yeah. I think people are looking at this a little to close, apps can mean a pretty broad category and even open up the doors to the jailbreak community, android community, and win phone community which would also trickle down into more sales throughout all the marketplaces.

Just yesterday I had an idea for an awesome adobe air app but there’s no category for them.

Just reading this post gave me a bunch of ideas I say ya not nay.

I think an app market (or software market) should have a separate website. Creating a sub-category here will make it go unnoticed and won’t get it the dedication it requires. I would say, it’s better to focus on the current categories. ThemeForest wasn’t successful because it had many categories, but because WordPress had a strong demand.

You’re absolutely right. Wordpress had a high demand and themeforest offered quality for cheap so people came.

This scenario should be replicated for apps except in a more dedicated format… like a separate marketplace.

I agree with what’s being said here in that there probably isn’t a suitable home here on code canyon as a new category, it will probably get lost quite a bit.

However, people are developing apps all the time and I definitely think there’s a Market for a new marketplace. Maybe if we go for a new marketplace, it could be tied in somehow to appstorm? And also maybe provide a way for selling subscriptions or memberships for web apps? That would be pretty cool.

What would be the definition for an app? or who will decide what is an app or not? because there is already a lot of items here than could be defined as an app, would it be necessary to move them into another marketplace if that marketplace is dedicated to “apps”?

And not sure it’s good for visibility of products to have several marketplace for almost the same thing. I feel that the “apps” are just more advanced items, more complete, but they could still be items and they have the same core. I mean codecanyon is for code so for me it’s more logic to have a kind of new category if necessary.

There is also the WordPress plugins. They are not really apps, but they can be complete. You can have a plugin that do something and do it fully and very well. In a once sens it’s almost like an app… The frontier can be tight. Just some thought I am having
