I have seen several themes use photos from video games or movies in their placeholder content on demos. One such example: http://themeforest.net/item/innovationscience-wordpress-edition-theme/full_screen_preview/93906.

Are we allowed to do this with any video game or movie? I’d like the content on my next theme to look a little different than the usual stock stuff.

It’s about time someone cleared it up once and for all. I got bored with waiting and used content I OWN to create a XXX template for TF which was refused for ‘suspicious content’ even though I have a signed model release. This is why I don’t bother creating site templates (right now anyway).

Well how can multiple themes use images from Final Fantasy in their demo version?

I’ve seen the issue covered a few times officially.

The reason authors can use whatever they want in the demo is because the demo is a website that they’re hosting and they are responsible for. Authors can put whatever they want on their demos at their own risk.

Where authors are responsible, is to make sure that the product actually being purchased and downloaded from the marketplace does not violate any copyright rules.

Seems like a fine solution, I’m already collecting some I want to use.

I think I had a good point back then.

People want to see what the website will look like with great stuff in it , not cat picture. Only Akay can use cat picture ..

It’s like when you go buy a nice 46” LCD screen , you want to see Pirate of Carribean in blue ray at the store , not an old vintage video … you want to see what it look like , how the content is displayed.

I doubt movie producer really care about the fact that store play their movie to show how good their tv are ..

What if I use the theme for my own personal site and I want to show future customer what it look like with real content , that’s a live preview .. but when he opened the ZIP file , he doesnt have these images , he have to create his own content ..

me too, but i am still confused. even official words are that author cannot use images without copyright, the reality and TF stock show that is a half way to measure that.

i was though to upload an item and if is rejected because of images used, just to point to the specific TF templates what use similar images. but, for what? if a reviewer say isnt ok (on rejection reason), the fact that a lot of TF items use not ok pictures, isnt for you.

kind of russian rullete here.
