I have a pair of KRK VXT8 ’s that I really have gained a respect for over the years. They are really excellent at bringing out the flaws in a mix.
GuitarCenter should probably have them on display, but I’d take what they sound like in those rooms with a grain of salt. The preview room at my local store has awful acoustics, and it seems like random people love to see how far they can jam the tweeter into the speakers with their thumb.
If you go with the VXT8 ’s you can probably skip the subwoofer as the bass on these things is amazingly crisp and clear. The VXT6 ’s do sound great, but the bass is definitely not as present as it is on the 8’s, and it is probably worth the extra $300 or so if you end up really liking the VXT line-up.
Good luck in your speaker search
What ever speakers you end up with Joel, if you haven’t already done so make sure you get some of these, it’s gotta be one of the best purchases i’ve ever made
They really do work well. Good luck.
@BCrutchfield – yeah, the thing I worry about going and demoing speakers is that I don’t trust my ears enough to be able to filter out the type of room I’m in and under what context I’m listening. I’m going to make a CD of a familiar song and get used to it with my current monitors (Mackie MR5s, BTW , which I actually like quite a bit for the price and will be keeping as a pair of reference monitors), and then see if they’ll let me use that for a reference. Hopefully they’ll have a couple of sets so I can compare.
Thanks for the info on the VXTs – they’re certainly in the running
@simaudio – I’m definitely going to purchase something like this at the same time. I have my current monitors sitting on Auralex foam two layers deep for isolation, but it would be nice to have the mopads or some equivalent since they’re made for that purpose.
Hey Joel,
Just seen your thread – I had an operation on Saturday so i’ve been reading music magazines for the last few days! I two am about to buy some new monitors. After reading countless articles and reading the same amount in reviews i’ve decided on the Adam A7x. But also spending some money on acoustic treatment. Only acoustic treatment I currently have is empty coffee cups…
Anyone have any recommendations for speaker stands?
Hope you enjoy testing the speakers!

Hey, that’s actually a good idea
Probably would have to be the disposable kind a la Starbucks and not the ceramic mugs
The irony for me while I’m drooling over expensive monitors is that the room I’m going to put them in is less than optimal, so until that changes no matter what I end up with is still not going to give me the ideal monitoring solution. I did outfit my current room with Auralex (at one point there was a great deal on Sweetwater and I got a bunch of it) which helped immensely, but it’s really too small for serious monitoring.
Let us know what you think of those Adams when you get hold of them!
Hi Joel,
Got the adams yesterday, am blown away by how good they are! Amazing monitors. I did however spend the same amount of money on acoustic treatment, so now im broke!
cheers,
jon
Congratulations, Jon! By all accounts those are awesome speakers, and if you treated your room at the same time I’m assuming there’s been a major improvement.
I’m going to pull the trigger next week and have narrowed it down between the AX7 and the KH120 , which are exactly the same price (and yes, my gear budget will be completely overextended as well :)). The 7” speaker is the big advantage on the Adam side, though I am really liking the specs and reviews of the Neumann even though it’s a 5.5”.
Have fun with those speakers
!
Good information. I’m still using 20 year old NS-10’s. Powered monitors would be convenient though.
Cool thread,
I’d like eventually to add a second pair for cross reference mixing..I’m thinking NS10s even though they re old…I guess They’ve done an updated version which look really cool…most pro studio pics Ive seen always has a pair lying around…..but Ive been pretty happy with my powered Digital Roland DS90s. They re really flat which reveals so much…but once that mix starts getting set..man they sound rich. three band EQ in the back…the only draw back possibly is that the speaker is only 8inch…..so overtimes I’ve learned to mix with less Bass and more feel it…cause when I would take the track to a different system car…ect…it was boomy. Shielded which has been great beside computer screens….They are 24 bit with SPDIF out…but I mostly just use em in analog mode these days. But I guess like all tools in an arsenal its how well you learn it overtime and what you get used to. My friend once loaned me some nice Tannoys…they re were prety sweet.
I love my Genelec 6010A / 5040A. Excellent sound. Well convey the depth and pan =)))Well, more like desktop computer speakers. Use as a shit control=)))
