... after more than ten years working on web design, i think there has been no more boring era than this one, caused by the wordpress style pages everywere, no matter the contents, the customers needs or the company-business strategy. All pages looks the same (and growing!) independently if they are related with hosting business, lawyers sites, porn industry, restaurants or even web design studios.
If this was a twitter, i would add #boredaboutwordpress

None of the themes in our portfolio look the same. And the next one will not look the same as the three before so i must disagree

Not talking about Themeforest (there is life outside here!
), but the general web. I use to navigate a lot and each day i find more and more sites using the same boring (because of the huge quantity) design concept. Yeah, graphically are different but the concept is pretty much the same.

The web is limited
maybe that is why. by the way : nice fishy-fishy

HTML5 and CSS3 are kind of exciting, but they basically just give new ways to do what we already did before…

I see what you’re saying…
I’m not a web designer., but surely there is a usability element to consider, which is why these styles are prevailing?
It’s all good sat there as a designer (me too) saying this could be more creative and exciting to use etc… but what about John Doe who isn’t fluent with the web like you and I?
He needs guiding through the web no? Not to deal with the extreme creative freedom of the designer’s ego?
I agree with what you’re saying, but surely the usability element is the reason for this?

It’s funny because there was more risk in the past when talking about design and web usability, when there was more (supposed) newbies navigating than nowadays, when many more people got used to the “web” environment. Today seems that SEO has replaced any other communication strategy, and i’ve discussed many times with my personal clients this tricky question:
Do we need to be on top positions on search engines?
I know the quick and easy answer to this should be “yes”, but my experience says that is not so easy to answer, many little and concrete things related with each company or business strategy could throw other interesting answers to this (apparently) simple question.
Do you remember the song “Video killed the radio star”? It should be like “SEO killed the web design star”.
To answer your question about usability i’ll use another question:
Why the hell all the business on net seems to have nowadays the same usability and seo needs? Isn’t weird? It should turn on some alarms… “aren’t we assuming really simple things when planning our net strategy?”
^ Sometime I don’t get you Pez …really man what do you care? The logic is you should encourage other to do more boring stuff and do there cloning WP or flash thing, the more ordinary stuff you see …meaning the more work for you if you keep doing unique stuff

^ I’ve started this thread not because of the Envato mrkplace, but because of my personal experience as a web designer and developer for over the years.
Since last year i’ve moved 3 clients with old, in my opinion, nice sites (some flash, some not, this is not about flash, really) to a plain boring and standard WordPress sites. The three companies were: a restaurant, a top financial company here in Spain and an architect studio. Each one had his own site, designed “ad hoc” matching their old needs, thinking in their own market target, trying to make something “unique” (if that’s possible) to fit their own corporate identities. Basically, we adapted the technolgy available to their communication strategy, what was, of course, the first of all while planning the projects.
Right now the three companies asked for something in WP, really standard, they didn’t care so much about the design, but so much about the number of entries on Google while searching for them, so all of them spend now the day uploading stupid and useless posts just to have more contents in WP indexed by SEO . And the funny thing is that they happy with it, so what can i do, except give them what they want.
But if you ask me: is this situation much more boring for you, not only as a designer, but also as someone who enjoys daily the net surfing? i would answer: of course.
