I’m a part-time developer and I have only one item on CodeCanyon “PHP Directory Explorer.” I don’t make a lot of money but I make some. Now, a guy releases a new script which is basically the same thing with a delete function and named it “PHP File Directory Explorer.” Someone I know mistakenly bought that script when he was looking to buy the one I released. How is this allowed? I find it unfair and I filed a complaint to Envato a few days back to which I have not received a reply yet. What do you guys think?

1. If customer bought in error, thats their problem

2. If you feel another author has plaguerised your script, report them. Wouldnt be difficult as its php, they must be one of your buyers. Lol.

3. Ever notice ford, gm, toyota all make similar cars , colors and specs ? Its no different.

I think mafiatic is taking issue with the name of the item—not its functionality. So while you have a point with #3 (similar products on the market), the names of said products are noticeably different than their competition. In this case, the names are extremely similar.

Mafiatic, contact support regarding the naming issue.

He is talking about one of my products, and since you didn’t copyrighted “PHP Directory Explorer” name, I can use it, never the less “PHP Directory Explorer” are dictionary words, and it’s pretty logic to call my script like that since that’s what the script is – read SportTipsWorld #3 point.

It’s about respecting other authors in the community, and right now you are not. You may earn an extra few dollars doing this, but in the long run the right thing to do would be to change your item’s name. What about “PHP File Browser”, or “PHP Directory Browser”? There are many other combinations you could use.

Actually this was simply a coincidence, none the less I saw several files with similar names, also I can’t change my file name since there isn’t such option.

And I am wondering… how may I earn a few dollars doing this since the user clearly see what he buys, also there is always a Live Preview of what he buys, it’s not like there is no demo or what so ever, in short, it’s the user decision whether he buy it or no, also there are no similar logos implied, his item is first in the results, and so on.

Here is another query: http://codecanyon.net/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&term=CSS3+Menu All of the results have similar names +-1 word, or even one letter: CSS3 Mega Menu, CSS3 Mega Menus, etc, and since those are generic names, can be used, it’s not about disrespecting other authors.

Alexandru P.

Pricop is right, i dont find any issues with his item name, i saw several WordPress plugins with almost the same name, thats why there is a live preview button, a preview banner, I m wondering how do you know a user wanted to buy your script and bought a different one, thats kinda funny.

Im with Pricop,

Look at slideshows,

Kenburns gallery, Kenbrners gallery.. Whatever.

Its natural to call the item by generic descriptive words, however…

What would be naughty is if Pricop changed his name to Maffiatic

Then one could argue the point.

Thank you for being realist, that’s simply a generic name nothing more, nothing less, it isn’t intended to confuse the users, also he could contact me first, and ask me to change the name (instead of sending his friends to accuse me on the Comments section of the script that “I stolen his product name”).

Another example is “Pagination Class”:
http://codecanyon.net/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&term=Pagination+Class

Which returns the following similar names:

  • PHP Pagination Class
  • Advanced PHP Pagination Class
  • Pagination Class 3.0
  • How is the other one supposed to call the script? “PHP Numerotation”? Just because… ?! “Directory” and “Explorer” are and will be generic names, so I can use them in the given context. Hopefully I clarified the situation.

    Alexandru P.

I never said you stole the name. I don’t own the name, I own the codes. I only wanted to know how others feel about this. I could have used a name more common for my script like PHP File Browser (I’m sure there’re 100s of them) but I chose to name it differently since I try to be creative with the name. I guess that’s my personal preference. I never accused you, I only said it’s a similar name. For what it’s worth, I think Envato should think about issues like this before approving anything and that’s my opinion only.
