I’m planning on uploading a new code canyon file in the coming weeks and wanted to know, from the community, what is the best way to protect your work. I know that with a swf the source code was (relatively) safe, but when uploading php and js files, people could easily get a hold of the source and never need to buy the item.
I saw a few items with video previews, but I feel that takes away from the user experience and interactivity.
Any insight would be appreciated.

I choose not to worry about it that much. The number of people that will take the time to copy all of the source is much lower than the number of honest buyers that will choose to purchase a file. I feel it’s much more of a waste to worry about rock solid ways to protect from copyright. Better to spend your time promoting and building your files.

well the key word you said that says you dont need to worry is ‘PHP’... as php is server side it does not matter but if you still feel you want it more secure minify it as its just a pain to undo that and remember to put a blank index.php or index.html file in directory so people dont know the file structure. you could redirect the index’s if you want as well to you items page

I think the number of people that will look for a pirated copy, on some other site, is much higher, but the number of people that will actually take the time to copy a bunch of source (with the exception of maybe CSS / jQuery) is much lower.

Flood the usual sites with an old version of your script that has a few obfuscated javascript time delay functions (ie: hidden in the middle of a jquery source file) so a few weeks down the track anyone who uses it will be redirected back to your item to purchase it.
</evil grin>
Authors have had a lot of success providing “extra features” for those who enter their licence purchase codes. eg: automatic updates on wordpress themes/plugins, or the ability to easily unlock extra features, or download additional plugins from your own site. There is no public code available to do this at the moment, everyone does it differently. Might change in the future though.
Also heavily advertising the current version number in all graphics / item descriptions / the item itself will discourage people using older versions in favour of the newer updated version they can purchase.
But yes, impossible to do complete protection. I hardly bother any more. Protection is good fun to implement though
lots of challenges to overcome.
