I would say I’d rather define professional in terms of “quality if work” not of the fact that someone is making money. “Professional” means much more than gettinh paid for a job.. it is more of attitude, love and passion. Having those 3, the quality of your work can never be low.. which brings the cash with it

I think I have to disagree with most of you. To me a professional in any field is a person that makes a living performing their service, no matter how good or bad that service may be. There are a ton of “professional” designers in my area, and most of them couldn’t design their way out of a cardboard box. But because they make a full living off their craft/service, they can consider themselves a professional in the field. Because of the loose definition of the term, I try not to use it..EVER.

Interesting answers!. But I’m with Mark on this one: Professional generally doesn’t pertain to the quality of someone’s work, but rather the fact that it is their profession.
There are around 25 definitions at dictionary.com, only one of which is to do with quality and competence, so if you’re actually using professional as a synonym for good, why not just say good? (Or one of the hundreds of other words in english that express quality.)
But my main issue with professional is this: it tends to be an adjective that is used by those who are not professionals or who are aspiring professionals. Not always, of course, but for instance, you won’t find designers in a motion graphics studio, post-house or TV facility congratulating one another on being professional.

I agree on this one 100%. Especially the part “it tends to be an adjective that is used by those who are not professionals or who are aspiring professionals.
There is a latin say, that always answers great issues in three words. “Acta, non verba!” – Deed’s, not words. If we think about this latin say, it makes sence.

+1 , while being both a professional linguist and video maker
... IMHO in any art field is most important just try to be an artistic master, and there are a lot of so called ‘amateur’ real masterpieces in the folk & underground culture and ‘professional’ sh*t in the popular mainstream media…

It turns out that the perception of the word “professional” in different countries is different. Because I do not agree with the wording of Mark:
To me a professional in any field is a person that makes a living performing their service, no matter how good or bad that service may be.But I’m not saying it’s wrong definition, because it’s just different points of view on one and the same word. For example in my country (I’m from Russia) is a professional person who does job at the high level. So if I see a any quality project, I can write – the work looks very professional, that is, at a high professional level.

“Professional” is the synonym of the “with love”...
...and “for money”
