I was thinking about open source for my theme framework, but the problem is I would need to somehow make money for my time. Is there any way I can make open source profitable?

yes and no….. is it directly profitable no not at all you will work long hours for free but if you doing open-source don’t do it for money to it for the love of doing it….. now indirectly if its a quality product and it gets around you will be known FOR it and built a following/reputation with the open-source/WordPress community which could lead to jobs/books/more sales for commercial products
