I just tried out new Creative Suite 6, and then I tried new 3d renderer in After Effects… JESUS ! On my i7 2600k, 16gb of RAM and hd6870, it was almost imposible to work. And scene couldn’t be simpler: one extruded text layer and one background layer so I could see reflections on text.
Seriously, I need new graphic card with Cuda. Also, I’m planning to use 250gb ssd for cashing and rendering. I’m planning to buy gtx 580, and have one question: will gtx 590 work in After Effects for rendering? I know that there is some options and methods, like adding it in some txt file which forces AE to see it and use for rendering, but havent found any proof. Hope someone can answer me.

I love and hate after effects at the same time
My computer is definitely feeling the pain of getting slightly outdated
Holly crap that is some beast of a machine…. 16gb of ram… Yeah the bottleneck seems to be the nvidia cuda enabled graphics card. Most nvidia support gpu rendering so you should be good to go.
Best to check with AE site for peace of mind though before you go spending.
RAM is really cheap tease days, I got those 16gb for les than $80. I found a solution for cards that are not listed on Adobe’s site:

They made an unlocker that enables any non-Kepler (gtx 6xx series) Nvidia card to be used in After Effects CS6 . YEY!
