There was a very good educational post a while ago which i cannot find; (it’s not in the Tips for Photoshop) it was telling us how to avoid that grey semi transparent line down the edges of shapes by ‘snapping to pixels’ in a setting somewhere. If anyone remembers the recipe or can remind me where the ‘tutorial’ is, i would be very grateful. Thanks.

I think you might mean this thread – http://graphicriver.net/forums/thread/share-a-photoshop-tip/55071 Haven’t had time to look through it but I remember seeing something about it.
Or one can simply select the Shape Tool and have a look at this here image

Aaaah THANKS guys. Deiby particularly – that ‘perfect pixel’ page was the one, where it showed how to reset measurement preferences to pixels. I don’t suppose we can do that AFTER something has been drawn and rasterized though. I ended up just shaving off the grey bit and deleting.

After something is rasterized you might be stuck just chopping it off. Marquee selection works fine to delete the edges.
If you are using vector paths you can fix it several ways. Zoom in, transform(ctrl+t) and nudge the entire thing so it’s not between pixels. You can also nudge selected anchor points only or snap them into place with the help of a guide/grid.
Whatever works for you is fine.
