Logo creation -

Hi,

My name is Dominick, i am a dutch filmstudent and i am currently trying to get somekind of image (a logo and website etc).

And i was wondering a few things: - did you all make your own logo? - Did you copyright your logo? - wat is a right price if you buy a logo? - does anyone know good logo creators?

Logo prices vary – it all depends on how much you are prepared to invest in your personal brand. Here’s my 2 cents worth to answer some of your questions.

There are some sites on the web where you can get a logo for $50, but there is probably very little concept that goes into it. There are other sites where you can make your own logo from exisiting clip art elements for U$49. And then there are professional logo designers.

But they don’t all approach it from a professional point of view. I’ve just completed a project for a client who had his logo designed by another ‘professional logo designer’ for U$100 – and I believe that this client was ripped off since his logo was just a default shape from photoshop with some type… I believe he could have got a better deal if he went to a U$50 site.

To get an idea of the value of a good logo, there are sites on the web that sell well designed, conceptually sound and typographically crafted logos, for prices of U$3000 upwards of.

Bear in mind that when you have a logo designed, YOU are going to have to love it as you’ll live with it every day as part of your business identity.

To give you an idea of the process that I go through when designing a logo: When I design a logo, I first research the product – I like to know my clients product, I like to know what my client’s competition looks like. I also like to apply color theories to the brand (theories developed by color psychoanalysts that help position the brand). When I design a logo I typically spend at least 3 days just working out my options on paper. Finding the right font alone can take 3 days to a week. On the other hand logo design is also a creative process and I can sometimes hit on the right concept and visual application for a logo with the first few hours of scamping.

My basic advice to you is to decide how much you want to spend on your logo and take it from there. How much time do you expect a designer to invest in your logo for what you can afford. It’s also important to take a look at the prospective logo designers portfolio to see if you like their style since logo design is a very personal thing.
