Hey everybody,

I’m Steve from Pixelcloth. I handle big part of the graphic designs that our team usually does, but know i came up with the new idea that i want to learn how to code. I got some learning material from Arch (the team’s coder), some internet tutorials, coding software but i still need some advice (backup) for me to start. Arch has a great way of bringing me down by saying “this is not childs play, it is hard, this can’t be learnt in just a week” – he is a little too pessimistic :p.

I’m usually a fast learner but i have a very slow start, so what I need to hear from you guys is how long did it take to learn to do this (i mean to be able to do a basic/standard website) ?

And if you have any other advice that you think it would help me please share :D.

P.S. if i posted this in the wrong place please let me know. Thanks.

What kind of code do you want to learn? Client side or server side?

Since you’re a designer, maybe it best to start learning HTML and CSS . If you’re already familiar with these languages you could start working on some jQuery or plain javascript.

At the moment I don’t have any good tutorials bookmarked on CSS or HTML , but I have learned jQuery via the really awesome ‘jQuery from sratch’ series from Jeffrey Way:

I literally started creating my own jQuery plugins after being a total javascript/jQuery noob just 1 week before.

Without question, you must have those two solid before anything else. HTML /CSS

http://net.tutsplus.com/articles/news/how-to-convert-a-psd-to-xhtml/ this is probably the best tutorial i’ve ever seen. I’m sure you’ll be coding in a week* if you watch that :)

  • Yes, you’ll be coding in a week, but quite possibly, not like a pro :P

EDIT : When you want to move higher into stuff like PHP , have a look at lynda.com, their good too
