Javascript in custom post types

I’m trying to code out a theme, and something I would like to do but not to sure where to begin is to create a custom post type, or some how insert in the homepage posts a way for the user to add images that (like 3-5 images) that operate sort of a mini javascript gallery. Is there a way to integrate this so an admin could set the images for the post, they’re then displayed as thumbnails in the post, and when clicked expand like a lightbox / prettyPhoto gallery?

Would I go about this by creating a custom post type or how do I begin to tie in custom options that can create this functionality? I’ve been searching wptuts website to try and find a tutorial close to what I’m looking for.
