Is this something that I could/should sell on here?

Hi everyone

I wasn’t sure where to ask this so I’ve posted in the All Marketplaces. Please move if it’s in the wrong place mods.

Basically I have a social dating site which I built and was going to use myself, but due to other work commitments I never got around to launching my own site properly so I’ve decided to package it up and sell the software.

It currently sits at: www.datingwebsitesoftware.co.uk

It’s got some nice features and it’s a bit different to a lot of dating sites out there, the social aspect of this one is that once you’ve joined you can invite your friends to write comments about you and they can recommend other users to you, stuff like that.

Obviously all source files would be included, it’s easy to change the templates or create new ones, it’s got an admin area for member admin, messaging members etc.

It’s currently set up for the UK but I’m going to add a selector to the admin for region and currency.

I suppose my question is… Is this something that I could sell on ThemeForest or CodeCanyon or is it not appropriate for these Marketplaces, and if not should I try and sell it independently from it’s own site?

Any feedback/comment much appreciated. Andy

Hello cookiedough and welcome on Envato’s Marketplace. If your script follows the Envato Marketplace guidelines you could definitely sell your script on CodeCanyon (on CodeCanyon since it’s a script, ThemeForest is more for HTML templates/WP Templates and/or other CMS themes).

Cheers.

Hi Andy, I always support ideas like yours. The site looks very nice, but I don’t think there is a place for it on Envato. You might be able to sell the template on TF or CC, but I don’t think the design is ready for TF and you won’t gain a lot of money from it.

I suggest you to keep developing it, add new features, change some details on the design and you might accumulate a good userbase. Who knows, if you have a good traffic and a respectable number of users you can gain some good money from it later.

Anyway, I wish you good luck! :)

Alex

Hi Pricop, yes i thought it would be more suited to CodeCanyon, just wanted to check. Cheers ;-)

Hi Alex, and thanks for the kind words of support. I understand what you are saying about the design not being up to the standards of ThemeForest the reason for this is that it’s really up to the user to create their own design based on our framework. The main reason for selling it is to share the functional code really, not so much the design. Thanks again for commenting, it’s much appreciated. :-)

It would be good to hear from a Mod or Staff member on their thoughts as to whether it would be something that could possibly get onto CC.

Any further comments appreciated. Andy

I’d also say it would be best suited to Code Canyon, as you are selling the script and not the design that way.

It’s hard to say how much money you’d make from it, but you are not signing a long-term contract with Envato, so it might be a good idea to test the waters and see how it sells. If you find it isn’t selling, then you can take a look at what you can try next. Envato has the people though, so that saves you on a load of marketing to bring people to the site, though you could still do that to gain even more sales and possibly affiliate payments.

How easy would it be to customise the script? For example, would it be possible to make it another type of site such as a way for film makers to find cast and crew? That’s just an example.

I would consider repackaging the site and using it as a comminuty based forum/site. It could be used for a niche product to help people find resources/like mined people in their area.

@Moonworks Yes these were my thoughts exactly with regards to the ready made market of potential buyers. The only thing that worries me is the fact that the most expensive items on their are $50 and if I was going to release it myself I was going to try it nearer to $100, but as you rightly say, they have the potential client base already and I don’t.

With regards to editing the files, obviously to make major changes you would need to know what you were doing with regards to php, mysql, html and css. But I don’t see any reason why it can’t be adapted for a different market.

@Tamixes Thanks for the advice but I think for now it will be staying as a dating site as that is what it was originally intended as. Can I ask why you think it should be repackaged?

There doesn’t seem to be anything like this on the Envato network currently so surely that would make it stand out.

@KobusSwartz Thanks for commenting but I think it’s more of a CodeCanyon project as I’m wanting to sell the system as a whole and not just the design template.

Thank you all for taking the time to comment anyway.

Anyone else??? :)
