I use delicious.com for online resources, and I had folder with freebies on my hardrive, each subfolder is one freebie and they are catalogued by type (icons, psd, scripts etc), it’s also important to save license files and source with each freebie you have.

- First 2-3 days sits in desktop
- Few days later, regular cleanup removes most of them and remaining segregated/moved into non-OS drive.
- After 3-4 months either removed from local drive or moved into DVD (if not frequently used) .

All those happens almost unconsciously

^ I too create temporary folders (usually with names a b c d) in desktop and when it reaches g or h, something inside become gets alarmed. If there are too many alarms in a day, the mild frustration leads to spending time with segregating old ones on that day. :D

I was thinking maybe use the Google Drive can solve the problem ? dump in the drive and make use the search feature, even allow you to search file type ..

I also do it like VF, its the best way, instead of a b c folders i have a desktop and 5-6 shortcuts to my important folders, the files remains on desktop are the files that is my clients preview files, and all i download goes in to download folder. every year i store the desktops like ” Desktop2011” and i have the summery of my year projects view on that folder just like a diary.

About resources, I instantly move them from download folder to my resource folder” a tree icon”, which is a big resource including major folders and sub folders, its very important to create an organized resource folders.

Example:

Resources

GRAPHIC

Freebies

_freebie#1

...

Photoshop

_brushes

_ styles

Templates

_stationary

_…

WWW

-freebie

-...

And I cleanup every time I feel the download folder is getting out of control. I delete most of the file in download folder, because i already stored uncompressed zip files in the related folder.

The most important thing is I never store them on my local hard , they are managed on an external hard drive and i sync it with two other external hard drive every month. One a passprot wd to have all my resource and my projects on the go.

But its important to have a great sync program and also sync every month. Or somthimes weekly on busy days, cause i cant remeber all the thing I did. And sync helps me to keep all these hard drives synchronized.

Having an orgnized files and desktop is the best thing every designer should have. It helps me alot.

But Sometimes It looks like a mess on my desktop. But never remains like that for weeks.
