Design of your theme is the most important part, that’s the part you figure out how your WordPress theme will look at the end. Id say design every single page and get them absolutely spot on before you start coding.

Always spend time on the design

No, a PSD version (or an HTML version, for that matter) is not required for a Wordpress theme. Any PSD provided is simply a bonus, so if you start designing and finish your design in HTML (like I often do), you can just include a PSD of whatever you have and warn potential buyers that a full PSD is not included.

I very, very rarely do a full blown PSD of my themes. I’m in the camp of authors who tend to design the elements for the site seperately rather than one big PSD file. Dunno why, I just find that easier to work with.

In my themes, i’ll provide seperate PSD files for things like headers, button styles and any featured images etc. Basically anything where I’ve used an image has a source file somewhere.

I’m like Jeff, i also provide seperate PSD files. I do my mockup in HTML , then i fire up Photoshop to design the different elements like buttons and so on.

A PSD file is not mandatory, but it is a plus in my opinion, mainly for customizing the elements (you give the PSD files so the ones that buy your template can edit certain elements and re-export the images).

Personally, I keep the PSD files very neat and organized since I can always put them up for sale at a later time on the PSD category or just offer them for free on my website. There’s nothing worse than having a good WP Theme and then just some sloppy, unorganized PSD files to go with it.

i think a psd of each design element is important for template buyers, ive not met any that dont customise in some way,a full psd is usefull because they can see the finished article before applying changes to the theme.

We’re all manufacturers and every product has to start in the design process,a full psd to start with will help indentify good and bad points about what your designing,

Id say good practice to be psd to html/css to wp/joomla etc. all bases covered and extra revenue.
