Hey,

I’m gonna start looking for a web host soon where I can upload my portfolio website with themes etc. I’m from Sweden, but I hope to have visitors from around the world, mainly europe and USA (probably not gonna be that much traffic though, at least not in the beginning).

Which web hosts are good and which should be avioded?

I don’t really need alot of space, but I want it to be relatively fast. For visitors obviously, but also for syncing the website from Dreamweaver to the FTP .

(Feel free to hijack this thread if you’re looking for a web host with other specs).

As always, I first recommend MediaTemplate. They are really great, fast in both service and support. If that’s too expensive for you, then I would go with HostGator.

MTs Grid Service Lite looks very interesting: http://mediatemple.net/webhosting/gslite/

Do they have a good control panel where I can see how many users I’ve had, where they came from, what browsers they are using etc?

search for Media “Temple sucks” on Google and you may reconsider. It is advised to search for that kind of phrase for any webhost you may consider and then go through the reviews etc.

I use Sharkspace (search on google) which I found to be awesome so far. took me forever to find this host and they don’t cater to hype or buzz like unlimited this and that.

Their support is outstanding and the best I EVER tried. Takes just 10 mins before you get a reply.

Also their server speed is great and I completely ditched dream(nightmare)host even I had like a year left on my plan.

Dreamhost left me on a cramped old server even I was a loyal old timer. The server was so slow I could not even load a page with just text on it. The ping was horrid and their solution was to tell me I could switch to their new “unlimited” servers which were of course even worse.

So if you want a good host, dig deep and be critical about the hype, like the hype about MT.

Talk to someone with real life experience.

I didn’t use them so far so I really don’t know. But if people like abc, Envato etc. use this hosting than it must be good. They had some problems in the past, but in the recent time, there were no problems at all.

The more I seach and the more reviews I read – the tougher it gets… There’s bad reviews about every host, which kinda is what to expect.

And also, It’s impossible to know If the company themselves go to host review sites to give good ratings. There’s usually a few reviews that say “This host sucks. Don’t EVER use this host” and some reviews are like “If God was a web host – this would be him. Excellent! Awesome!” etc.

I think that to some extent; you always get what you pay for. I’m probably gonna avoid the $5/month hosts/packages, even if the ratings are good (unless there are countless of good reviews).

Bah, I rellay don’t know which web host to take… :/

EDIT : UI20 is right though. There are 1,280,000 hits when I search for “Media Template Sucks”, but only 1,000 hits when I search for “Sharkspace sucks”. But then again, sharkspace is probably a much smaller company.

All hosts have bad reviews. Like all games have bad reviews, all toys, cars etc etc. Some people are just cranky and bitter and like to bash stuff for a living.

The way to make a choice could be to see how many customers each webhost has and then devide by the amount of hits they get for sucking. Then use that number to make your decision.

If that doesn’t work then try to read some of the links andf see if it is just empty bashing or if there is some reason behind it.

Also remember on Google if you search for sharkspace sucks it will list all the linbks that have the word sharkspace in it even without the suck part. so go though the first few pages until it stops showing links with the keyword suck in it. Same goes for media temple of course.

I looked at some reviews and coupled with my own experience I would go with sharkspace.

I actually didn’t want to advertise it here because I am worried lots of people will see it, get it and slow it down lol.

But hopefully it won’t be an issue.

How do you know Evato uses MT.

QAs far as I know Themeforest etc use a multitude of providers. Like s3 from Amazon for filestorage and delivery etc.
