It depends on the final use of the model. If it’s for Flash 3d, then try to approach zero ;)

If it’s for current games (PS3, xbox360, pc) then low-poly isn’t anymore “low-poly”...I mean, these beasts move hundreds of thousands of polygons in real time.

Some examples:
- Cars in Gran Turismo 5 will have 400,000 polygons (GT 5 Prologue had 200,000, and GT4 on PS2 had 4,000)

- Drake (Uncharted main character): 30,000 polygons (seems that 80,000 in Uncharted 2!)

- Snake (Metal Gear Solid 3, on PS2 ): 4,000 polygons

- Virtua fighter 5: each character had around 40,000 polygons

Consider that low-poly for a MMORPG like WoW is different to FPS engine requirements.

WoW for example has apparently an average of 1000-1300 per character…. and the maximum:

“For the blizzard art challenge they stated WoW characters have a 2000 max poly count”
