I wanted to ask the experts. How long does it usually take you to get a Buddypress online? I am talking beyond the basic installation with things like getting the design right, groups, plugins, membership level…... Could it be done overnight, several days, or several weeks? I wanted to hear from your experiences.

To create a BP theme takes weeks if you want to do it right. That’s assuming you already have a WP theme and you’re just making it BP ready.
If you just want to know how long it takes to launch a BP site and you already have a theme and everything. I suppose the answer depends on how much you intend to modify and customize. Just installing and configuring everything can be done in minutes.
I am not talking about a custom theme. It would take time even for a simple Wordpress theme. I am thinking about the following – if you have a Buddypress theme from themeforest, you know your requirements, plugins needed, and only had minor cosmetic changes to the theme. I was thinking about the actual process of creating groups, forums, and blogs so the site can be “moved in”.

It’s always more work than you think. First you must learn the theme as they all have their own internal system. My BP themes for example are very unique and there is a learning curve to my themes internal workings. This is countered with video tutorials, a support forum and now we’re producing written tutorials also, but still it takes a couple days to get the site setup and published how you want. This is just part of building a website.
You can set up a site of this scope in a day if you know exactly what you’re going to do and execute it properly, but if you bring in plugins and they possibly have conflicts or styles don’t match. Those little problems can add hours and even days to a project.
Where is a good place to find a contractor for Buddypress installation and set-up? Do you know of anyone who has expertise in atleast one theme which would make things easier and faster.
Parallelus, is it ok to shoot you an email about a buddy press question?

I know a guy that I can direct you to if you like. I have no idea what his availability is but I’m happy to forward your request on to him. Send me an email.
