This will only apply if your blog is related to web/graphic design… but I have found you can get a surprising amount of traffic when you submit a blog post to the user feeds on sites like Net/PSD Tuts, Abduzeedo, Smashing Magazine, etc.
You get a post at the top of the user feed of Smashing Magazine and you could get a couple hundred hits that day from it while it’s visible. This is all only temporary traffic, but I’d say it helps to get the word out and it’s super easy to do.

I’m sure it’s really simple but I don’t understand what you mean by “submit a blog post to the user feeds” ...

I think ThemeBlvd means try submitting your articles to sites that offer “Community News” where users can share their own links in a sidebar etc… NETTUTS used to do this but I believe that was changed with the redesign

I was just looking on the Envato tuts sites and it looks like they might have cut this feature from their site with the new design update they did recently…
But basically many design blogs have some sort of “User News” (or whatever that blog wants to call it) where users can submit links to their new posts, tutorials, or whatever. The links generally get posted on an area on the sidebar.
For example go to Abduzeedo, and look on the right sidebar under the advertisements. There’s an area called “User News.” If you sign up for a free account at their site, you are free to post user news. So when you release a new Blog post, you’d post a new announcement there. You won’t get much SEO value from the link, but this would get you a couple hours of exposure right there on their homepage… then your post will get filtered into their archives.
Many big design sites out there have similar features.

I was going around to all the big sites I used to post at and it looks like they’re all cutting those features from their sites! Not surprising… I know it always seemed too good to be true. More and more people probably caught on and all those sites were stuck with a bunch of spam.
The big hidden gem before was posting to Noupe.com’s community news then if it got approved a few days later, it would get feed onto Smashing Magazine’s site, as well (because that’s who owns Noupe) and i would get so much traffic from that. I guess you get out of the blog promotion biz for 6 months and things change!

I already emailed Vitaly at SM , he wanted some stuff from me to publish on Noupe some month ago so we’ll see what happen with that.
