Is there anyway I can email all of my customers and ask them to rate my files so I can put one up for Free File of the Month?

Surely envato, could subscribe buyers confidentially to product updates for items they purchased.

i.e. Email….

Item number ….. Has just been updated, please click here to view changelog, here to comment, here to rate, or here to download new version.

Try to include something on the item page or the profile page or even within the item itself to subscribe buyers to your own marketing database.

eg: see some of my items for button ideas, or look through the popular items to see how different authors direct buyers to subscribe.

As dtbaker suggested, the best and pretty much only way to do this is if the buyers opt-in to your own mailing list, hence, if they are interested in updates, they leave their email. If not, the potential effect of being automatically informed for a one-off buy for a “sub-client” might become annoying for some. Also, keeping an “Updates Log” in the item description is nice, because those that are truly interested, check it out periodically, and re-download accordingly.

Alternately, of course there’s also Twitter, and again, it’s sort of a mix between the two… followers interested in hearing about updates the moment they hit the marketplaces simply add you willingly, and have access to such notifications within their own stream. If they don’t it means they don’t need it or just plain don’t care.
