Nice bit of research there Matu, the whole thread is very interesting reading!
To anyone who is using images in their previews that they do not have permission to, I suggest you update the images immediately.
The thread which Matu has quoted from includes many people saying things like ‘look at how this file is breaking copyright’ etc. EVERY SINGLE LINK they put on there now links to a dead page, i.e. the item has been temporarily disabled (including some from the top author here). These aren’t from a few shady authors either – files pulled include Orman Clarks best selling WP theme and work by SevenStyles.
Check Orman’s twitter, they pulled the files without notifying him either.
Please can we get an official statement on this and what action is being taken.

It is a pity that such matters couldn’t have discussed here (maybe in an author only forum) so it could have be contained and laid to rest a lot quicker

I think that if a reviewer approves your file it means that it’s ok with envato guidelines.. If someone puts an illegal image in the download zip, the rieviewer will immediately reject the file.. so if they left you put an image in the preview until today it means that also the reviewers thought it was ok.. right? So I think that if there are so many illegal images it’s both responsability of authors and envato staff.. I’m going to change the previews of my posters, if it’s the right thing to do.. no problems on that. but I think it’s not fair that some files has been disableb without any email or notice..

Hi folks,
Thanks for raising these questions. We have always had information on the wiki and in the upload instructions about properly licensing images and other assets for use in previews.
I’ve just posted an important post on Envato Notes on this topic to remind authors of their obligation to ensure that we keep the marketplaces free of copyright infringement.
So I’m glad that the community is also working to build awareness for those authors who may not fully understand yet their responsibilities.
Anyhow I hope you all find the post useful. And thanks to matu for raising the post over on Microstockgroup where a similar discussion has been happening.

Hey Collis,
maybe to help the matter even more you could try and encourage more PD Authors on board who have lots of exciting model stock?
Currently there are lots of really nice model stock that suit Flyers etc, but it would be really awesome if there was more
Nice topic…. +1 for this. IF it is possible to give some links of free stock sites in here it can be very helpful.. or we can use our Asset Library also..

Many thanks for this post Collis, especially for addressing the main concern here: how can it be that so many obvious infringements slip through. It makes sense that reviewers are not IP detectives and that it is our responsibility to ensure our files match the criteria.
Most importantly you have hinted that there will be a more stringent application of the guidelines in the review process. I think this is really important, because even if reviewers are not IP detectives there is really no excuse for having items featuring Metallica, AC/DC, the Beatles and stars of similar calibre in previews. It’s one argument not to know every single rockstar/popstar/movie star in the industry, it’s another to turn a blind eye… So it’s really good to hear that something is being done about this.
I think it’s not only a question of IP. It’s also a question of fairness between authors. I for example spend many many hours trying to find quality stock photography, either on Photodune and similar sites or in free directories. It would be much easier and much quicker for me to go to my favourite rockstar’s website and simply scrape a few photos, as many others have done. I do think that it should be part of Envato’s responsibility to ensure that fairness in this area is maintained.
In any case, good to hear that this is on Envato’s agenda.
Thanks
Chris
