Well Maya certainly can ! But remember that: 1 – it is not industry standard anymore. 2- it is really complex and the UI is not friendly at all. 3- it is getting old.

WHAT ?!

Dude..

no man 3dmax wasn’t built for animation it’s basically for modeling the object..If you want to do simple animation then go handshake with coppercube with 3d max or maya that’s the perfect one. But for 3dmax you need to have plugin and for maya .obj exporter is already there to convert 3d modeling into coppercupe i think you should try maya rather than 3dmax for great and finest modeling.

Friends you experts confusing MEEEEEE :(

I want to build Awesome high level animation with realistic character modelling. SO again i am puzzled that 3DMAX is not for animation and its for Modelling. But i think for modelling ZBRUSH is best for high realistic character modelling.

  • Hey, you CANNOT compare them. I am trying to tell you that.
  • Maya is NOT getting old, and it IS the production-standard for almost all feature-films. In fact, between Maya 2012 and 2013 there are much more features compared to 3dsmax 2012 and 2013.
  • In the end, it depends on the studio you will be working on – on some studios, they don’t care if you use Maya or 3dsmax because they only use C4D . Others, don’t care if you know how to use 3dsmax because they only use Maya (very rare).
  • Maya is the standard for film-oriented projects (be it models, scenes, rigs, characters, whatever).
  • 3dsmax is mostly oriented towards modeling, but that OBVIOUSLY does not mean you cannot animate with it. Just look at Rayfire and/or FumeFX examples.
  • In production pipelines, you never ever use zBrush alone. In these cases, it is always used with 3dsmax and Maya. For personal projects, you shouldn’t use zBrush alone either, but blend it with Modo, Blender, 3dsmax, Maya or even C4D .
  • C4D has an incredibly easy-to-learn curve, whereas 3dsmax has a much steeper curve, and Maya due to its hardcore node-based system, can be really tough to learn. Not to mention Houdini.

Now that you know all of this, don’t use a program because I have told you so or because someone else said “that program is better than the other”. NO program is better than the other – they are meant for different purposes. If you do this as a hobby, go for C4D or Blender, or if you’re mostly interested in modeling, go for Modo. If you want to make a living out of this in feature-films, go for Maya, 3dsmax and Houdini – you’ll need them all.

HAPPY ?! :)
Have fun ;)

Blender cookie is a site for blender tutorials.

In my opinion blender today as it stands easily rivals 3dsmax and maya put together.

That being said blender probably has one of the steepest learning curves to date, although it’s new interface is much more user friendly.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time getting to grips with this though.

I’m taking maybe even half a year – year to learn it properly.

Modelling is great with blender, now that bmesh is included in the latest build. Rendering is great in blender, now that cycles is introduced. Sculpting is great in blender.

If you need any help I’d be glad to help.

Sorry Aliasha but I have to disagree with those three points above.

Crozer also makes very good points as to what you need to use if you wish to do this professionally. I would also add Aftereffects to the list as well.

Ok, I like blender and excited to learn it, but i want to know for complete animation in blender i have to do some script/coding in python. Means i also have to learn python scripting to make complete superb animation.

To be honest, you don’t have to know anything really to do with python and scripting when it comes to animation.

For animation you have a lot of pre made scripts at your disposal, such as rigid bodies, soft bodies, particle systems.

For animations of models, you have to rig the model and then move the bones to create the animation.

But this is way way… into the future. Trust me just creating a simple model and rendering it will take you a lot of time.
