If you go on it, and put an artist name in “Search Music” it will change that whole field without loading a new page. It also has suggestions, is that Jquery and PHP ?

From the way their URL ’s work, I think they are using PHP .

I am trying to have a startup and thinking of having a contest. Basically the website will give away items like gift cards for American Eagle, Games, Consoles, Hardware etc.. for participation. Participation is things like contests, activities etc..

Without getting too much into how the revenue will be earned, and whether or not this is a good idea.. (I posted my idea in front of other entrepreneurs with successful startups and VCs and they said its a really nice and serious idea and I should get on board).

Okay, now the actual question.

I am trying to make a one page website currently that accepts signups and referrals. And has Corporate information, and other information to encourage a lot of traffic via people who are already famous (like Partners program @ Youtube). I need to show investors some demographics and numbers.

Would a contest be a good idea to boost all this process? I am thinking, having a referral contest and giving away prices that would normally be available from the website (Gift cards, iPads, etc)

Also, I know this might come out as those scam sites, so what can I do to get around that? Should I mention that I am a registered company..? what else can I do?

wordpress + buddypress will do the job, as you will have the users signup. referring could be done using one of the invites plugines available in the plugin directory of buddypress. Same case with video upload and watch only the points system that you need to custom make it I guess. Shop can be done using wordpress e-commerce plugin.

Can you customize Wordpress so that it only shows what I exactly want to display?

I am working on a site where users can sign up, refer other people, watch videos, and there will also be a point system. We will be using more features afterwards too like shop (maybe).

What CMS would be best? I don’t want the site too feel all CMS like either. It will look like a normal HTML page but we need the functionality of a CMS .

Is it better to use a CMS , make a theme and even edit the CMS so that it works the way I want or is it best to just make our own script?

What I like about Yahoo mail, and even Gmail is that they associate shortcuts with actions. For example, to create a new message in Yahoo, you can press “n” key (making sure no input boxes are selected though, or it’ll type in the box) to create a new message.

That is a great example for Usability. How can I implement that on my site?

Example : Press O to visit page X.

Edit : I know accesskeys but don’t they require to press ALT + Accesskey ? Is there anyway we can make it just the accesskey?

I think this is also a nice feature. The user can watch the clip without being stressed out. If you take a look at megavideo.com they always show some poker advertise before the movie starts and you have to click on it. It becomes very annoying so don’t do things which let user rage

Thats not what I want to do. I don’t want to have click to open ad thing, its really annoying. And megaupload sometimes opens ads even though I just click play, thats just not user friendly. I’d rather make no money than annoy my visitors

Probably the best model is to sell sponsorship for the particular video or for the month or whatever and not charge per viewing. That is how tv or magazines work. The cost for sponsoring is based on the likely number of viewers but not directly.

Yeah, I love that idea. I had it before but I thought I would lack the credibility to do this. How much would sound fair? $1000/month? Wouldn’t it be better to charge less and work my way up?
